The world's best destination!

The Geirangerfjord is so unique it has been included on UNESCO’s world heritage list. At the entrance to the fjord lies the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund, named Norway’s most beautiful city. The combination is unbeatable – and highlights are thick on the ground!

Geirangerfjord - The heart of the World Heritage area

It is easy to fall in love with the area which has some of the biggest attractions in the country, such as the Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen (The Troll Road). However, many consider the entire area to be one continual attraction, where the impressions change around the next bend in the road, in the fjord or headland.

From ashes to Art Nouveau

It is not without reason that Ålesund was voted the most beautiful town in Norway by the Norwegian people in 2007 and the newspaper The Times in 2009. It is easy to become fascinated by Ålesund, with its Art Nouveau style and a myriad of turrets, spires and beautiful ornamentation.

UNESCO World Heritage Status

The Geiranger and Nærøy fjords are Norway’s only natural heritage sites featuring on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. This area of great natural beauty found its place on the UNESCO list on 14th July 2005 and encompasses some of the longest, deepest, narrowest and most beautiful fjords in the world!

Hjørundfjord & the Sunnmøre Alps

The Hjørundfjorden is surrounded by the mountains which are reckoned as the core area of the Sunnmøre Alps. The combination of fjords, mountains and local way of living make Hjørundfjorden and the Sunnmøre Alps to a varied and exciting destination.

National Tourist Routes

Geiranger - Trollstigen is a road through west Norwegian nature at its most powerful, with a dizzying view of sheer mountainsides, deep fjords and fertile valleys. Since the childhood of tourism, Geiranger and Trollstigen have been visited by tourists from all over the world. The travel industry has been benefitting from the fjord and the road for generations.

Runde - diving and bird paradise

Facing the ocean, on the west coast of our region lies the island of Runde. The small island has no more than 150 inhabitants, but from February to August every year the nesting season takes place and more than 500.000 birds gather on the island.

Walking & hiking

The combination of fjords, mountains and the ocean represent refreshing contrasts for anyone interested in hiking or climbing. The topography of the Geiranger, Ålesund & Sunnmøre region is a part of Norway with great variations, from a coastline facing the ocean, to the deepest fjords and the highest mountains in the famous Sunnmøre Alps.

Ski & winter

Møtet mellom fjord og fjell i Sunnmørsalpane og i Geiranger er like spektakulært sommer som vinter. Trolig finner du ikke noen andre steder i verden med denne enestående kombinasjonen. De snødekte fjelltoppene, den skarpe og klare vinterluften, utsikten og naturopplevelsen er forfriskende for kropp og sjel.

Fishing & hunting

Getting a fish on the hook is an exciting experience no matter age! In Norway, fishing in the sea and fjords is free. In rivers and waters you will need a fishing permit, which can be locally purchased. Fishing for salmon, sea trout or char requires a state fishing licence, on sale at all post offices. Autumn is the hunting season for game and hart.
