Geirangerfjord - The heart of the World Heritage area

It is easy to fall in love with the area which has some of the biggest attractions in the country, such as the Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen (The Troll Road).  However, many consider the entire area to be one continual attraction, where the impressions change around the next bend in the road, in the fjord or headland.

Nature and the cultural landscape have always represented the greatest attraction in this area. These factors still spellbind the visitor and you would have to be exceptionally blasé if you failed to be impressed by this astounding creation of Mother Nature, dramatised by the will of man to maintain a foothold on the steep mountainsides and glean a living here.

Indeed, our fjord landscape is so special that UNESCO has included the area on its list of World Heritage Sites and The National Graphic Traveller has voted the area as the best preserved World Heritage Site!

With waterfalls dotted here and there, fragrant meadow valleys and snow-covered mountains, the whole area is perfect for your own exploration of our attractions. They span from pure natural attractions to interesting museums, churches, galleries, information centres and more.

Of course, it is most important to take in the fantastic natural beauty in your own way. There are countless opportunities and activities to try out. There is every type of accommodation in the Geirangerfjord region. The range runs from simple camping sites and cottages to rent right up to first-class hotels.

There are plenty of places to eat well, as well as shopping opportunities. There are rich traditions in many of the villages for local markets selling agricultural produce.

The main season is from May to September, but in spring and autumn you can often experience the region at its very best, when the ever-present forces of nature are at their most impressive. There are also excellent opportunities for winter sports, especially in and around the Strandafjellet Ski Centre.

Welcome to the most spectacular of the Norwegian fjords!
